A pub, a casino and a celebrity chef

Vegas has many dining options from White Castle all the way up to Joel Robuchon. What ever takes your fancy 24/7 you can probably find it somewhere – talking about food of course!

The sheer choice can be overwhelming, and sometimes you want to relax with some comforting food.  New restaurant on the block is Robert Irvine’s Public House at the Tropicana Hotel. Billed as an American pub the menu features dishes from Robert’s travels.

Having almost learned from our experiences we didn’t have a starter each, but decided to share the Public House Poutine.  Described on the menu as tater tots, pulled pork & shiitake onion gravy, peppered goat cheese and red vein sorrel.

The crunchy deep fried potato hash bombs are smothered in a rich mushroom earthy gravy, laced with tender pulled pork.  The goats cheese adds a sharp relief from the intense meat.  Definitely enough for two to share, almost enough for two for dinner!

So sharing a light main of a wild mushroom pizza and a chicken avocado salad seemed like a good idea.  Luckily the pizza wasn’t as big as the one from Five50, also not as good. We were spoiled the night before!

The pizza had a lot of similar flavours to the starter.  The crispy base was a good vehicle for the earthy mushrooms, the melting cheese boosted by caramelised onions.  The strange part is the bagged mixed salad going limp on top.  Almost as if the kitchen had run out of rocket and improvised!

The salad was meant to give a bit of respite from the fried goodness with a healthy crunch.

The crunch was definitely there – shredded napa cabage and sprouts providing welcome relief.  Creamy avocado calming down the spicy dressing, and being an American salad more crunch was added with deep fried wonton strips.  Strangely the chicken was forgettable.

Predictably there was no room for dessert that night…
