Carson Kitchen
 

After having visited a number of restaurants in downtown Las Vegas on a Foodie Tour, we promised ourselves we would head back to Carson Kitchen the next time we visited. Little did we know that would be over two years later.

On the corner of Carson and 6th, next to an amazing doughnut shop (get there early!), you will find a modern restaurant that specialises in American cuisine. The menu reads like a lesson in comfort food, designed for sharing, and very difficult to narrow down your choices. For the foodies there is an open kitchen, note the swear jar to keep everyone in check.

You can pop in for a very quick bite, grab some decent food before heading into Sin City, or linger a little longer. We picked the latter, a couple of cocktails at the bar, and then settled into our high stools at the pass, overlooking the busy kitchen. FatSteak Club heaven!

  • The crispy chicken skins were a no brainer as a nibble whilst we read through the full menu

  • Served hot and crispy, salted, and with amazing smoked honey. The mix of fat, salt and sweet is a great way to start

  • We chose a more than drinkable NZ Sauvignon Blanc, a sensibly sized serving in a mini carafe

Meat!

  • It was difficult to decide on the next dishes, especially when sat at the pass overlooking skillful preparations of the flatbreads and salads

  • We decided to go for one of each meat - chicken, beef, and pork

  • The stand out surprise star of the evening was the chicken thigh in a white BBQ sauce, meat chargrilled, and a rich but not overly sweet sauce

  • The short rib was sliced like a fillet steak but had the intense flavor of a hard-working muscle. The acid tangy of the kimchi cutting through the rich meatiness

  • The ‘one-bite’ pork belly slices coated in a perfect blend of Buffalo and Blue cheese sauce, the classic combo

Save a little room for dessert, even if you share one. It had to be the brownie for us. Having had a laugh and a joke with the chefs, I think we did well. Don’t want to get anyone in trouble, but double brownie winner!

The brownie was everything you wanted, rich, sticky, fudgy, and a top layer of a very bourbon forward icing. The dessert was garnished with a thick salty slice of caramelised bacon. This alone was worth the money!

We can’t recommend this place highly enough. You can eat well and at a reasonable price in a few places downtown, but Carson Kitchen gives you quality food, a warm welcome, and crispy chicken skins!
