The Inn at Whitewell
I recently returned to one of those places that when you get there is exactly how you remember it being. I was looking for somewhere to enjoy a classic country walk followed by a proper pub lunch in Lancashire (on my way to Yorkshire). A flick through Where Chefs Eat reminded me of the Inn at Whitewell, which offers exactly that - a real FatSteakClub diversion!
First the walk. The Inn has its own booklet of walks of varying length that you can take a free copy of (or download) with the excitement that they all start by crossing the river Hodder via substantial stepping stones.
Located in the Forest of Bowland, the area (not too far from Clitheroe) is mainly farmland with stunning views from the hills. the sight of the pub tucked in the trees by the river as you return is very welcome.
Onto the food. The Inn at Whitewell does classic pub grub dishes extremely well. They can tell you where each ingredient is sourced and ensure every component is perfect. We enjoyed the potted crab and avocado (with the vivid pink of the crab pleasingly contrasting with the green of the dish) and the homemade black pudding to start. Both were packed with flavour and generous in proportions.
Despite the presence of tempting meat mains we both went fish for the next course. A densely packed fish pie (with cheesy top) and the beer battered haddock and chips (with mushy peas) both being faultless. Again the portions were substantial. So much that pudding was out of the question unless we did another walk.
A word on drinks: there is an extensive wine list thanks to the on site vintners (worth a visit on the way out) and good ales kept well.
All in all, if you want a rural pub experience you can rely on, the Inn at Whitewell will deliver. If a day trip would be too far, then stay in the B&B rooms!
